Join film historian Keith Crocker and the Reader Services Department as we host an evening of Mexican horror. Using a rare 16mm film print, Keith Crocker will show one of the classics from the golden age of Mexican horror cinema, The Witch’s Mirror (El Espejo de la Bruja), from 1962. This film will be shown in the library’s reading garden, drive-in style. In this delightfully creepy tale directed by Chano Urueta, a husband murders his wife, and years later her ghost emerges from a witch’s mirror to take her revenge. In conjunction with the movie, we will briefly discuss Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s horror fiction masterpiece that bedazzles the reader with spells, hexes, evil sorcerers, and cursed films, Silver Nitrate. Besides presenting the film, Keith Crocker will discuss other Mexican horror movie classics. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!

STORIES OF EXILE

The East Meadow Public Library was awarded a book discussion grant by the Yiddish Book Center. The theme is Stories of Exile. Stories of Exile is a reading and discussion program to engage teens and adults in thinking about experiences of displacement, migration, and diaspora. Using Yiddish literature as a portal, the program will feature works in translation that explore narratives which grapple with questions of homelands, journeys, identity, and belonging. Reading groups will compare these works written in Yiddish in the early and mid-20th century to works by contemporary writers from all across the globe.

September 11 at 7:00 p.m. - In the Land of the Postscript: Short Stories by Chava Rosenfarb, translated by Goldie Morgentaler

This collection makes available in English for the first time a complete selection of Chava Rosenfarb’s short stories all in one place. All the stories in this collection deal with the afterlife of Holocaust survivors in North America. Since Chava Rosenfarb was herself a Holocaust survivor who settled in Montreal after the war, she speaks in these stories from personal experience at the same time as she allows her imagination to inhabit the minds of characters far different from herself.

Aug 7 @ 7 PM - Evening Discussion: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Join us on August 7 at 7:00 pm as we discuss Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world.

Stories of Exile is a reading and discussion program to engage teens and adults in thinking about experiences of displacement, migration, and diaspora. Using Yiddish literature as a portal, the program will feature works in translation that explore narratives which grapple with questions of homelands, journeys, identity, and belonging. Reading groups will compare these works written in Yiddish in the early and mid-20th century to works by contemporary writers from all across the globe.

Malala’s experiences visiting refugee camps caused her to reconsider her own displacement — first as an Internally Displaced Person when she was a young child in Pakistan, and then as an international activist who could travel anywhere except to the home she loved. This year’s Summer Reading Club theme, All Together Now, expresses the joy we share as we see things returning to something approaching normal. Feeling confident to come back to experience our author events, our craft program, and our book discussions in person, is a major step in rebuilding our library reading community. Of course, you can’t just read our theme without singing the Beatles ditty “All Together Now” in your mind. And just like in the song, the Reader Services Department promises you a summer of “1-2-3-4-can I have a little more.” Yes you can- 3 more to be exact. We will have 6 events that we hope you will attend in person, and the seventh, a Zoom Read ‘n Share, will allow everyone to talk about their favorite summer reads.

Registration for the summer reading club will be open until August 7th. Three book reviews admit you to the Goodbye Summer -Wish it were Longer Party in August with Jane Rosen, whose new novel On Fire Island debuted this May.

Looking forward to the rest of the summer, our Reading Club events include a quilting craft, a meeting of the Yiddish Book Club, an evening book discussion-and, of course, our summer wrap-up Read ‘n Share.

We are looking forward to a great, fun-filled summer of reading as we meet All Together Now once more.

June 12 @ 7 pm - Adult Summer Reading Kickoff With Author Marilyn Simon Rothstein

The Reader Services Department of the East Meadow Public Library is thrilled to announce the kickoff of our twelfth annual Adult Summer Reading Club on Monday, June 12th. Marilyn Simon Rothstein will be joining us at 7:00 p.m. to discuss her books, which include Lift and Separate, Husbands and Other Sharp Objects, and Crazy to Leave You. Marilyn will be signing copies of her works which will be for sale after the program.

The registration for our reading club will be held in the lobby from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and we will also take registrations at the kickoff party which will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After June 12th, you can either register online at our summer reading club website https://emlibny10.readsquared.com or with the Reader Services Department. Our reading club will provide members the opportunity to attend exciting book events along with a delightful party at the end of the program.

In these sixteen stories, available in English for the first time, prize-winning author Yenta Mash traces an arc across continents, across upheavals and regime changes, and across the phases of a woman’s life. Mash’s protagonists are often in transit, poised “on the landing” on their way to or from somewhere else. In imaginative, poignant, and relentlessly honest prose, translated from the Yiddish by Ellen Cassedy, Mash documents the lost world of Jewish Bessarabia, the texture of daily life behind the Iron Curtain in Soviet Moldova, and the challenges of assimilation in Israel. Feb 1st through Feb 17th - Blind Date with a Book

BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK

For those of you in love with books, we are bringing back our Blind Date With a Book program. Beginning Wednesday, February 1, readers can check out a wrapped book and find out the title when they get home. Inside the package is a form to write your name, barcode and a short review of the book, including your opinion. You can return the form to the Reference Desk. The program will end Friday, February 17 and we will not accept forms after that date. A drawing from the completed forms will be held for a small Valentine prize. While you can check out as many titles as you want, only the first completed form will be entered into the drawing. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover-now you have a chance to see if it’s true.

Join us on January 24 at 7:00 p.m. as we discuss In The Woods by Tana French. This first book in the Dublin Murder Squad series is both a gripping police procedural and psychological thriller. The 1932 film adaptation of this extraordinary novel, Island of Lost Souls, will shown in the library’s reading garden, drive-in style.
