Join film historian Keith Crocker and the Reader Services Department as we host an evening of gothic horror courtesy of the master of the mystery and the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. Using a rare 16mm film print, Keith Crocker will show The Masque of the Red Death from 1964, which is based on the 1842 short story, “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe. The movie also incorporates a subplot based on another Poe tale, “Hop-Frog.” The film is about a prince who terrorizes the local peasantry while using his castle as a sanctuary against the “Red Death” plague that stalks the land. The film stars Vincent Price, Hazel Court, Jane Asher, David Weston, Nigel Green, and Patrick Magee. This film will be shown in the library’s reading garden, drive-in style.

Besides presenting the film, Keith Crocker will discuss other movies that have been adapted from Poe’s works, focusing particularly on the Roger Corman/Vincent Price collaborations. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!
