The Unfinished Business of 1776 by Thomas Richards

Two years after the final military victory at Yorktown, the last occupying British soldier left New York and caravans of Long Island loyalists packed their belongings and moved to Canada. And America lived happily ever after, or did it? The economy was in a shambles. The founding fathers had drawn up a road map for their new government, known as the Articles of Confederation, that almost nobody liked. Our beloved Constitution was drawn up, but nearly didn’t pass – a narrow vote of Virginia politicians pushed it over the edge. After Washington was sworn in, he had to be personally involved in putting down a rebellion in the west due to an unpopular tax on whiskey.

Richards does a good job of navigating the uncertainties that led us to today’s uncertainties. Among the really interesting things learned here is that women had the right to vote during the John Adams administration, but only in New Jersey. A very enlightening read for American history buffs.
