The Patient by Tim Sullivan

Felicity Wilson, a young woman and mother with a past history of drug addiction, died of an overdose. At least that's where all of the evidence points, according to one of the detectives in Bristol's Metropolitan Crime Unit. George Cross, the detective with the best arrest and conviction record of the MSU, thought otherwise. Felicity's mother visits the station and convinces Cross that she was murdered. After he visits Felicity's apartment, and after finding that her young daughter was there when it happened, he agrees. Unfortunately, he could find no evidence that supported this conclusion, and he only based his investigation on the facts. As Cross interviews the people influential in her life, he is caught on the slippery slope of assisted suicide-was Felicity's life so miserable that she actually wanted die, and why would her mother insist that she had been drug-free for months?

This is the third in the British series that has finally been released in the United States. I previously reviewed The Dentist, where George Cross, the gifted detective on the autism spectrum, is introduced. This novel brings the reader back into Cross's world where we check-in with his long suffering partner, Josie Ottey, and the new hire MacKenzie, as they try to soften Cross's behavioral quirks. His hoarder dad Raymond also figures prominently, as does the wily priest who tricks the reluctant Cross into a masterful organ performance. The publisher will slowly release the rest of the series, ending in a new title fall of 2026. If you want to enter the delightful world of George Cross, start with The Dentist and settle in with a decent cuppa.
