The Fate of the Day by Rick Atkinson

This highly anticipated history completes the second phase of the Revolutionary War trilogy. As on his first book, The British Are Coming, he writes a very well rounded narrative, filling in details that invoke all of the senses in the smell of the cannon smoke, the stench of dead bodies, the cries of pain, and the heat and humidity of a swamp on a hellish hot day. Occasionally he will foreshadow major changes in the war's narrative. We all know how this all turns out but he leaves us constantly in awe of Washington's ability to pull it all off as the outnumbered general avoids direct confrontation and keeps up a cat and mouse game with a large but befuddled foe. Highly recommended for its depth and overall readability. When done, he will have produced for the Revolutionary War what Shelby Foote did for the Civil War.
