Check Out What's New in Reader Services!

Hello Booklovers!

If you haven’t yet seen our library, we would love to tell you about some of our new Reader Services features. On the main floor near the entrance are new fiction and non-fiction books. This is also where our magazines are kept. We have ordered many new magazines such as Economist, Family Tree Magazine, Great Day Outdoors, and Women's Health. We also purchased new crafting titles such as Do It Yourself, Scrapbooks & Cards Today, and Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts. We hope that you come soon in and browse.

Downstairs, where the travel is now shelved, we have created a popular library. If you are looking for suggestions on what to read next, this is a good place to begin. You will find some of our more popular books here as well as “books to movies” suggestions, read-a-likes, and “read ‘n share” offerings from our patrons. There is also a Reader Services bulletin board which will keep you up to date on which new books are coming out as well as current bestseller lists.

If you would like to meet with us for a library tour, just ask for a Reader Services librarian at the Circulation Desk - we would love to show you around your new library.

Tails & Tales - Adult Summer Reading Club

THE EAST MEADOW PUBLIC LIBRARY ADULT SUMMER READING CLUB RETURNS

BE A PART OF THIS FABULOUS PROGRAM

REGISTRATION BEGINS JUNE 8, 2021

CHECK OUT OUR SUMMER READING CLUB BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR RECOMMENDED TITLES WE’RE SURE YOU’LL LOVE!

Welcome to the 2021 Adult Summer Reading Club, Tails and Tales. Our theme this year honors the wonderful comfort of animals, both wild and domesticated, that helped us get through the Covid pandemic. If you had a cat to cuddle, a dog to walk, or even a fish to feed, it brightened your day and gave purpose to your life. And, as you know, most animals have a tail and a tale. Do you have a pet pic you would like to share, especially if it also contains books? Does your fur baby have a tale? Please send your pictures and/or a story about your pet to us at readers@eastmeadow.info so we can celebrate them this summer.

We start our summer with a whale of a project, with the first part on Thursday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m., and finishing up on Thursday, June 24th (same time). Librarian Janine Walsh will lead us in a crocheting craft, “a whale of a coaster.” Kits will be made and available for pick-up, so that we can learn to crochet a whale coaster for that cool summer beverage of your choice.

Our June Mystery Club title is Dog On It by Spencer Quinn featuring the P.I. team of Chet and Bernie. Even if you are not one of our regular mystery readers, we urge you to join us Tuesday, June 22nd at 7:00 pm to get a taste of the Chet and Bernie mystery series. Spencer Quinn aka Peter Abrahams will be the featured author at our End of Summer Party in August, and has a new mystery in the series debuting in July.

Other summer programs include a visit with the plant man who will tell us what to plant to draw wildlife into our gardens, baking with a back story-learning to make desserts that come with a tale, an animal-centric trivia contest, and of course, book discussions.

Our programs once again, will be online and primarily zoomed. Sign-up and registration begin June 8th, and can be done at our summer reading club website. Our tentative calendar is located on that webpage as well. We will have little gift bags once a week, randomly drawn from the submitted reviews-each patron can win one during the summer. Our fantastic bibliography will also be on the webpage where you will find our recommended books-some available now, and some coming out during the course of the summer…both in e-book and print book.

We hope that you will enjoy our summer tale!

Jan 14 @ 7 PM - Mystery Book Club - Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

Join us on January 14 at 7:00 p.m. as we discuss The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware. When she stumbles across the ad, she's looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss--a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten--by the luxurious "smart" home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn't know is that she's stepping into a nightmare--one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder. She knows she's made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn't always ideal. She's not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she's not guilty--at least not of murder. Which means someone else is.

Fifteen-year-old Jessica Silver, heiress to a billion-dollar real estate fortune, vanishes on her way home from school, and her teacher, Bobby Nock, a twenty-five-year-old African American man, is the prime suspect. It’s an open-and-shut case for the prosecution, and a quick conviction seems all but guaranteed; until Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury, convinced of Nock’s innocence, persuades the rest of the jurors to return the verdict of not guilty, a controversial decision that will change all their lives forever. Flash forward ten years. A true-crime docuseries reassembles the jurors, with particular focus on Maya, now a defense attorney herself. January 21 @ 1 pm - Lunch 'N Books: Inheritance by Dani Shapiro

Join us on January 21 at 1:00 p.m. as we discuss Inheritance, a book about secrets—secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman’s urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. It is a book about the extraordinary moment in which we live—a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover.

So, in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.

In the 1920s, after oil was discovered beneath their land, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. Many of those investigating the murders were assassinated. The FBI took up the investigation, and badly bungled the case. In desperation, the young J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White. White put together an undercover team, including one of the only American Indian agents in the bureau. Together, with the Osage, they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

As a way out, Tara began to educate herself, learning enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge would transform her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.”
