Lala is leading a charmed life-her address is in a good section of North London, her husband has a lucrative job, and her two children go to nice schools. But Lala wants a better life. i.e. the BEST life, and she is making plans. As she writes her to-do lists, she imagines a house in the best part of London, her husband making partner and much more money, and her children attending the toniest schools, despite the fact that her youngest hasn't exited the baby stage and her daughter has a penchant for drowning hamsters. Plucky Lala knows that when there are slips in the pathway, a determined woman can always overcome them and she doesn't let adversity stand in her way. For example, she seems to have a stalker who is getting frightfully close to her past-eliminating him is a necessity and framing one of her best friends for the death is also. If said best friend has a demon husband who interferes with Lala's plans, it is totally logical to snuff him too. Her husband just won't get with the program to better himself at work, but that won't stop Lala from using every means necessary to facilitate that herself. And even though her daughter won't cooperate with anything related to her mother's school choice, Lala isn't at all phased-it just might take a little extra effort to make it happen.
Lala is a sociopath so having things go her way no matter what are just tools in her wheelhouse. We've all read psycho-thrillers where psychopaths and sociopaths make a person's life a living hell, but in this novel, all the main character wants to do is secure a better life for her and her family and dispense with any information that contradicts her current status. Her desires will be absolutely no problem as long as you don't get in the way of her path to success. Here is a character that you can't rationally like or condone, but secretly enjoy watching-she is so deliciously single-minded. I'm sure she'll be a hit on the self-help circuit!
