New people are showing up in Maple Bay, Nova Scotia, a coastal town with beautiful views and historical secrets. Cass is house-sitting for a year and hopes to revive her defunct writing career. Peter is turning forty, and is contacted by his ninety year old grandmother who he didn't know existed. Her letter, inviting him back to his ancestral home of Bellwoods, came at a great time-his life was a shambles and he was happy to bail on his dodgy roommate. They enter a place of mystery. Local lore has it that a fierce sea battle ended with a treasure being brought ashore and buried somewhere on the grounds. Locals and out-of-towners alike have come looking for the loot with all sorts of devices, maps, and various levels of enthusiasm. It is even said that a few generations back, some townie children found the treasure and reburied it so they could dig it up later. Unfortunately, just when the younger generation gets serious about solving the mystery, their elders start dying without having revealed what they knew. Will Cass write the book that explains the mystery? Will the dead bodies stop piling up? Will Peter ever get that furnace fixed? And exactly what does the town librarian know?
This was a really fun read. Like in all mysteries, the reader immediately starts eliminating suspects...well good luck with that. There's a great plot twist that will make you feel like a fool when it happens and will make you rethink everything that you thought you knew. Happy hunting!
